Workout Music

Posted in: Music, Technology

For the last three weeks1, I’ve been working out 4 days a week2 (brief pause while I give myself a self-congratulatory pat on the back). I’m back to playing volleyball three times a week and my shoulder was starting to get sore from the combination of too much activity and me getting soft. :) The solution, get stronger.

While woing my little workout, I hook up my iPod to the little stereo in there using the Kensington Stereo Dock for iPod3. It works quite nicely.

I created a smart playlist of songs I’d rated 4 or 5 stars and songs that were in my ‘Allegro’ playlist, however that doesn’t end up being enough songs4 and I’m getting a bit of repetition. Hence the question:

What are some good “workout songs”?

Please post recommendations in the comments and I’ll happily drop a few bucks at the iTunes music store. The more I can do to make the working experience good, the longer I’m going to be able to keep this up. :)

One other note, the Denver Craig’s List has way more workout equipment listed for sale than it does technology toys.

  1. Since the workout room has been complete in the basement. [back]
  2. I pulled the nordic track out of storage this weekend, so I’m going to try using that on the off days from lifting. [back]
  3. Which can be controlled by a Harmony remote - pretty cool. [back]
  4. I tend towards more mellow tunes and have only started building the Allegro list - why can’t I tag songs in iTunes? [back]

Physical - Olivia Newton John (I know it is a personal favorite of yours)
Eye of the tiger - Survivor
Sunshine Day - The Brady Bunch
    YMCA - The Village People
and nothing says “I am ready to work and get sweaty” than anything by James Taylor

I know you keep all these songs on your “hidden” playlist.

You can, in effect, tag songs in itunes. Add tags to the comment field, and then you can make a smart playlist for certain terms in the comments. Not the easiest, but possible.

Yeah, that’s the same work-around I tell people for my Tasks and Photos software, but it’s not the “right” solution. :)

Simple Plan - Me against the world
It’s punk rock, but you might like it if you’re up for an Eye-of-the-Tiger style workout.

I ‘tag’ songs by putting them in playlists. “Explicit”, “Driving”, etc.

Gotta be heavy, surprised only 1 person has mentioned In Flames at this point, personal favorite of mine is My Sweet Shadow, but in general their music is perfect for lifting, it has lulls where you can clear your head, think about your lift and only your lift, gather up energy, and then big bursts of angry spots for good intense sets.

I came here looking for music for my mp3 player while going for runs, and am pleased with what I have found.

Songs that I keep on my play list right now for both Running and the gym are really just songs you here in constant rotation at local dance clubs.
The the Mortal Combat theme song is a great motivation song.
People to check out music by
JayZ - I think I have 4 songs of his
Will Smith - Probably 8-10 songs of his
    50 Cent - 2 of his songs
Black eyed peas - quite a few upbeat songs

I’ll be adding to my list soon, I can list it because it is well over 3 hours of music because when I run, it is for a long time.

I like workout music CDs that have a constant tempo. I prefer rock music, the harder the better, but that’s hard to find in workout CD format.

yea, for workout music, you basically need hard-hitting euro-dance music…. nothing else does the job really. Search around on iTunes for “euro club hits” or check this link:

I think it’s funny people have used this thread to display all their favourite music INSTEAD OF WORKOUT music.

I mean c’mon people… who the hell are you fooling? Just because YOU like it doesn’t mean it’s good WORKOUT music.

For running, just download some marine corps cadences. For pumping iron… the Rocky soundtracks are perfectly suitable.
